This was Charlie’s day and as the match was just about to kick off out came the former legend, Charlie to a standing ovation.
Notts started this game fast and with some good touches keeping the ball on the floor.
Somner was the first to try his luck, with a shot from long range but it went wide.
It looked like the new management had told the players to shoot whenever they could.
On 17 minutes a defensive error let in the speedy Weir-Daley who rounded the keeper with ease and slot the ball in the empty net to give the magpies a deserved lead.
Weston was the next one to go close when he unleashed a powerful shot which had the Wrexham keeper flying through the air to flick the ball wide for a corner.
Notts were in control for most of this half but it was only a fantastic save from Notts keeper Pilkington that kept Notts in front.
A free kick was played into the area and a Wrexham player flicked the ball towards the top of the net only for Pilkington to get a hand and push it over.
Half Time Notts County 1-0 Wrexham
Wrexham started the second half the better of the two teams and only for some last ditch tackling and good fortune were to keep Notts in front.
This was until the 70th minute when Substitute Spann surprised the Notts keeper with a fine low shot to get Wrexham level.
Notts pushed people forward but on the 90th minute substitute Sam was fouled by the Wrexham goal scorer Spann when clean through.
The ref showed the Wrexham player the red card.
The question was now could Notts get anything from the free kick in injury time? Well the answer was yes.
Neil MacKenzie was the man to step up and bend the ball round the wall and into the net to send the Notts fans into jubilation.
